CLANSMAN RADIO COURSE AT RAF CRANWELL

Three air cadets and one staff member from 1220 (March) Squadron recently attended a Clansman radio operator’s course to learn how to use and set up the radio system commonly used in the Falklands War.

Cadets Adam Flack and Aline Johnson, Cadet Sergeant Scott Goodall and Civilian Instructor Mr Tim Kightly all went on the course held at RAF College Cranwell and came back experts at communications.

The course was spread over a weekend and taught the students to erect 5.4m masts and correctly operate the equipment. The course culminated in an exercise to practise using their newly acquired skills.

Cadet Adam Flack said, “I really enjoyed the course and feel confident about using these radios when we next go on camp”

On 30 October eight cadets from 1220 (March) Squadron took a trip to the RAF Signals Museum at RAF Henlow, Bedfordshire.

During a guided tour, they saw radio, radar and related communication equipment dating from World War 1 to the present. The cadets are presently studying advanced radio and radar, a part of their Communications Award.Cadet Matthew Ward said “It was really interesting to see how radio has changed over the years.”
