Air Cadets at 1220 (March) Squadron recently spent the evening in the company of Wing Commander Paul Bower OBE. The purpose of the visit was to share the experience of Paul’s day at Buckingham Palace.
Wg Cdr Bower explained to the cadets what an OBE is and how anyone can be nominated to receive an award. He described how when he first heard that he was to receive an OBE he didn’t know whether to believe the news and it only felt real when the Queen’s birthday honours list was published. He was overwhelmed with congratulatory messages he received by post, telephone and sociaL media.
Paul briefly described his day at Buckingham Palace and was proud to be able to take four members of his close family with him. The squadron then watched a DVD of his presentation. He was presented with his medal by HRH Prince Charles.
After the DVD the cadets were given the opportunity to ask questions and to see his medal. Paul was able to describe the subtle differences between a military and civil awarded medal.
The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the evening and found it interesting to see what actually happens at the investiture ceremony. They are very proud of Wg Cdr Bower’s achievement particularly as he started his Air Cadet career as a cadet at 1220.
